About the Desert Sicarias

A Team for the tough ladies

Buhurt is not exclusively a men’s sport. There are women who enjoy knightly team combat as well. Women have their own teams and they compete against other women. Purely at their own discretion, they can also compete against the men. They use the same armor, weapons and techniques. A woman in armor with a halberd is not to be taken lightly.

Training for women

The ladies train along with the men, but if they don’t want to wrestle with sweaty guys, they certainly don’t have to. Since the sport is exactly the same for any gender, everyone learns the same techniques and skills at the same time.

How teams work

In a Buhurt (a team vs team fight), there are two opposing teams of fighters. These teams are of a pre-determined size. The most common domestically are 3v3, 5v5 and sometimes 10v10 or 12v12. This is how many fighters per team are on the field any given round, but like other team sports there is also a bench available to substitute fresher fighters in for fighters that are tired, hurt or that have had an armor failure. Therefore, a 3v3 team will have 5 people, 5v5 has 8, etc. Furthermore, there are dueling categories (1v1 duels for points) and many teams have dedicated duelists who do not participate in Buhurts. This means that a team can actually be quite large.

What being a knight offers to women

  • Physical Fitness: the weight of the armor and the demands of physical combat will render anyone into a state of physical prowess – to be “fighting fit”. Strength is required to move, stop, change directions, swing a weapon and overpower your foe. Endurance is required to do it round after round. Every difficult exercise is done for a reason, and it will change your body.
  • Confidence: Buhurt will instill a desire to win, to be aggressive, but not for the sake of being cruel. Fighters know how to manipulate weapons and their opponents bodies so that they can win. They develop the ability to see the weakness in others and so be able to help their friends to be stronger, or break down an enemy. This strength gives confidence to meet the world head-on, to acknowledge the costs of actions and to be able to take the risks.
  • Community: The Buhurt community is the best – all the ladies in Buhurt are super supportive of each other regardless what team they’re on. When a group of fighters train together, work together and then beat another team, it is an amazing feeling. Even if they don’t win, just knowing that someone has your back and you have theirs in the extreme stress of combat is a level of sisterhood that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
